84. New beginnings

Life continues, we've had the pleasure of seeing very young roe deer for the first time. We'd seen a mother and baby in the croft and then Rich found the baby asleep in the meadow so I managed to get a few photos without disturbing it. I read that the mothers leave their babies during the day so as not to alert predators. The babies have little scent so are safer left hiding in the long grass. I went out yesterday and thought I'd spotted them again near the polytunnel but realised it was a different mother as there were 2 babies with her, so beautiful.

We have had an enormous order of building materials, luckily we had help getting most of it across and unloaded. It was still a lot of hard work and there's still 4 tonne of sand and gravel and a pallet load of concrete blocks to bring over but it has meant that work has continued to gather momentum on the house. We're still hopeful that we'll be in for Christmas although Rich is now saying he meant Christmas 2026!! Luckily I have a signed declaration from him which says otherwise.
The studded walls are nearly finished as is the wiring. The last of the insulation is going in and we've a staircase arriving next week, hoping the weather works with us on that one. The first lot of plasterboard being fitted is imminent, we're just waiting on delivery of the insulated vapour barrier which goes underneath.
Once the walls are up then plastering can commence although there is the small matter of moving the 70 stone Rayburn off its plinth to fit plasterboard behind it. But it's starting to happen and feels like it's finally taking shape. We have realised that the extension which includes the porch won't get done yet and will be completed once we're actually living in the house.
The weather has been very changeable, we had a really hot dry spell followed by grey and windy. The unpredictable winds have meant we've not managed to get out to do a food shop for a couple of weeks. We're hoping it's calm enough to go to Inverness this weekend as Rich needs some plaster before the staircase arrives and I can go to Tesco. The polytunnel and vegetable patch are doing well. We had our first lot of courgettes yesterday. The majority of tomato plants have flowers as do the squashes. There's still a lot of weeding to do in the veg patch but it's hard to make time for everything. We're really hoping that once the house is done we can put more energy into the garden and croft.
