82. Lighter days return

The dark days are behind us and the light has returned. This has coincided with some settled warm weather, sunshine and blue skies. The trees are changing colours as their leaves slowly unfurl, the larch were first followed by the birch.

The pond is full of tadpoles, there's thousands of them and on one of the pillars of Hectors shed there's a female Blackbird sitting in a nest. All around us there is the beginnings of new life.

I've started sowing seeds which are all still in the cabin at the moment. The tomato plants are ready to be repotted as are the calendula, basil, livingstone daisies and yarrow. I've also done sunflowers, sweet peas and cornflowers. I'm hoping to move some down to the polytunnel to make room for the squashes and courgettes which I hope to sow this week.

We're trying to spend some time in the veg patch every day weeding and preparing the beds. Rich has planted fava beans which are now just starting to come through and we're planning on putting our first potatoes in later today.

I'm hoping to plant lots of flowers in the veg patch as I did last year. It's the only safe place away from the deer. Once we're living in the house we'll work on making the garden more secure. It's quite demoralising to sow seeds and nurture them only for them to be eaten as soon as you plant them out.

Work has continued on the house, Rich has been putting insulation in the roof, started on the studded walls upstairs and done the first fix of electrics downstairs. We've help arriving in a couple of weeks so we'll hopefully get the downstairs top screed done on the floor and hope to get new window lights fitted in the roof. We've continued bringing over the sand and gravel from our last order which is incredibly hard work, I think I'm getting too old for it. We've brought over 5 tonnes, there's just 1 tonne left to do. Rich thinks we'll need another 4 tonne before we're done so can't wait for that.

We did splash out and had a night in a travelodge in Inverness. It was lovely to be able to have a bath, I managed to fit 3 in while we were there. We couldn't return empty handed of course so brought a shop back from tesco, a couple of bags of compost and 6 bags of sharp sand.

So we're still on target (Rich assures me) to be in the house by the end of the year. Hopefully by the time I write my next blog there'll be big changes. 🤞
