The clocks have gone back so we're getting up a bit earlier, the light helps! But by mid afternoon the light is waning so we're trying to work together in the morning to get something done. This week Rich has been strimming the meadow and I've been raking it and putting all the grass in a big pile. If we don't cut it the wild flowers struggle to get through the grass. We're a bit late doing it but hopefully next year there'll be a beautiful wild flower meadow.
With the darker days and especially if there's no wind we're not bringing in as much power. Our batteries don't seem to be holding their charge either which means we've lost electricity overnight on a few occasions, new batteries are becoming a priority.
We've made a start on clearing the polytunnel, nearly everything is out now. There's just a few tomato plants left with the remaining tomatoes on, I'll probably give them another week to ripen. All the squashes are out, we had 23 altogether which was quite impressive. I dried them in the sun then put them to store in the barn. I'm keeping an eye on them as 2 of the meruhen ones had started to go mouldy around the stalks. They didn't go to waste though, I made a curry with them yesterday.
As we use them I'll save some seeds for planting next year.
Our woodstore is looking good, we've managed to put quite a bit more away. It'll be interesting to see how much we use this winter. I think we use less in the cabin than the barn, the log burner is smaller and because of the solar gain and it being better insulated we don't have to light the fire as often.
Autumn has truly arrived now, the colours are beautiful. There's a carpet of leaves in the wood behind the cabin and many of the trees are nearly bare.
We're making plans for the renovation of the house and still want to end up there eventually! I keep telling myself that if we're determined enough it'll get done. I'm really hopeful that next year will see big changes. But for now I'm very content with life in the cabin.
