27. Fire and Water

Well, the last fortnight or so has been particularly challenging. It started with a trip to the dentist. Because we've moved around a lot it's been sometime since we've been and I'm terrified which doesn't help! I had a week of toothache a couple of months ago so have been trying to pluck up courage since then. Rich has lost a filling so that spurred us on to finally find a dentist. I decided to really push the boat out and have my eyes tested as well. We managed to get appointments for early afternoon, this would give us time to walk out and drive to Inverness. Optician appointment went well, slight prescription change and ordered couple of new pairs of glasses as my old ones are so scratched it's hard to see through them. I was very nervous about the dentist and it wasn't good news for either of us. We've both got to go back for extractions and I've been advised to see the hygienist regularly. Such fun! We were in there much longer than expected and when we drove back to Badrallach to walk in it was already dark. As we got out the car it started to rain heavily, we'd both got heavy rucksacks on containing our weeks food shop. Walking in the dark takes so much longer, we wore our wellies and waterproof trousers as the track is so wet and muddy. I wasn't very happy! Its one of the few times I've seriously questioned our decision to move here especially when my foot got stuck in a particularly boggy bit and I fell over. Luckily the dozen eggs at the top of the rucksack remained intact.

Once back with the fire lit and a cup of tea, things don't seem so bleak, I've also, once again done over double the amount of steps recommended for the day so won't have to move tomorrow.
The boat is now once again seaworthy (although we've not tested it yet) The manufacturers of the boat sent us a new red plastic bit to weld onto where it's wearing through. We had to turn the boat over which wasn't easy but we finally managed it on the fourth attempt.  Rich then very cleverly welded the new bit on, it all looks very professional. We've just got to get the engine back on it, at the moment it's fixed to a piece of wood over the water butt in the garden. We brought it back for Rich to do an oil change.

I managed to hurt my back digging a ditch and it was just getting better when I did it again chopping wood. I spent a day resting and it felt much better so yesterday I decided I was fine to walk out and do the weekly shop in Inverness, I was also going to pick my new glasses up. We took the quad down to the gate and then started the walk, I managed fine until we got to the car and it took ages for me to get in. I couldn't lift my left leg without it being excruciatingly painful. There was no going back now though so off we set, the journey was difficult. Everytime the car jolted my back went into spasm. I got out to go to the opticians and could barely walk although after a couple of minutes it felt much better. I decided if it went into spasm in Specsavers I'd do a stop, drop and roll and they could call an ambulance. All was ok though and I walked back to meet Rich and we did the food shop. We then drove back to the jetty as a neighbour had kindly offered us a lift across on his boat. The back spasms started again but luckily our neighbour had painkillers in her handbag so I took some and after a short time managed to get out the car and into their boat. Such a relief to get back and lie on the bed! All of our shopping, apart from stuff for the fridge is still in the car as we couldn't carry it all (I couldn't carry any!) and the quad is still down by the gate at the other end of Scoraig.
So today I thought I'd take it easy and just potter. Rich took himself off to the house where he's been charcoaling the wood for the cabin using a big blow torch. I was just sweeping the floor in the byre when Rich runs in shouting "get me some water, I've set the house on fire"
I fill the washing up bowl and run after him (back pain forgotten) into the house. There's flames all over the kitchen. He throws the water over them then I rush back to refill the bowl. I cleverly find a bucket and leave that to fill under the tap while I take the bowl back to Rich. There's still lots of flames so I run back to fetch the bucket which is empty because for some reason it's got holes drilled all around the bottom. I fill the bowl again, Rich has dragged some of the burning wood outside, it's raining so fortunately it starts to extinguish the flames. The bowl of water is thrown inside again and with a bit of stamping the fire is finally out. It's then that I remember the fire blanket hanging on the kitchen wall!
A lesson learnt though, don't use a blow torch near wood that's recently been coated with preservative.

So with that little escapade over with, it's time to look forward to the arrival in a couple of days of my youngest and middle sons who are coming to stay for a week and luckily there's still a house for them to sleep in. It's a bit too cosy in the byre for four!
As I said earlier it's been a trying couple of weeks and we've still got to return to the dentist to have teeth pulled out yet! I did get a lovely message on my serendipitous Instagram account though. From a Dr in America.  He said;
"Hi dear...how are U doing you look so attractive on your profile pic no man on is right seance well past by without saying hi to you my wonderful creature."

I'm a little concerned about his spelling and use of grammar especially with him being a Dr but lovely that he sent me such a beautiful heartfelt message😂. Obviously I've had to decline though from allowing him to send me any more messages. After all I'm married to a man who really sets my house on fire! Who could wish for more?

I'm hoping the next couple of weeks are uneventful.
