15. Christmas Eve.

Glad to be back after a frantic few days in the Midlands. Such a contrast to Scoraig and a bit of a shock to encounter busy shops and traffic jams. We came back in on the postboat a couple of days ago heavily ladened with bags of food. Tabby was pleased to see us, she'd kindly left a mouse and a disemboweled shrew on the rug!
Today was calm so Rich thought it would be a good idea to fetch another 20 concrete blocks from Badlaurach jetty! not quite how I'd envisioned spending the day but never mind. We've still not managed to get them all across because of the weather and we'll soon need another load. We've not used our boat for about 3 weeks and strangely it felt quite daunting. We had a calm trip across though and quite fortuitously we found a package in the shed over there for us. Some jersey potatoes, butter and some mint from my parents. I must be getting stronger because I'm now finding the blocks slightly easier to lift. We got them on and off the boat and loaded them in the trailer. Unfortunately the quad couldn't get up the hill carrying them all so we had to take half of them out and reload them once the quad was up the hill a bit.
Rich wants to start building the extension as soon as possible as he's worrying the foundations are filling with water. He wants to build the walls to get the damp-proof course in and start the floor. We've had to concede that the renovation is going to be a 2 year project not 1 as we'd first hoped.
So tomorrow will be our first Christmas day with just the 2 of us in our new home. At the end of January it'll be a year since we first came to view Ali Shornets, how fast the year has flown. I'm so glad we took the chance to change our lives.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful new year.

  1. I think what you are doing is fantastic the place you have is amazing. There is an awful lot of work to do and I’m sure you will have many frustrating and demoralising moments. Just remember you are living the dream. I think it’s something a lot of people wish they could do but are not brave enough.
You’ve done it !!! And I think that deserves a massive ‘well done’. Just make sure you stay positive this winter and come the summer you will be ‘living the dream’. I totally believe in and admire what you are doing.
Take it easy and don’t overdo it. Enjoy the journey.
