Until now we've only had a small 80 watt solar panel connected to a 12 volt battery. We've been able to charge our phones and have a light on, we've also listened to the radio in the morning. Strangely I haven't really missed having electricity, we moved in summer so we haven't really needed lights as it hasn't really been dark. Now though, the nights are starting to draw in. Over summer it has been the fridge that I've missed most, there's only so long milk can last without refrigeration. Living without a washing machine has also been a challenge, handwashing clothes soon lost it's appeal. We have taken various kind neighbours up on their offers of help and used their washing machines and luckily Ullapool has a laundry so when we've gone to do a food shop we also take a backpack of dirty washing. But all that hopefully is about to change as with the advent of electricity we'll have a fridge and washing machine again. There are also free showers available in Ullapool, we'll be needing them for a bit longer yet.
In the way that I hadn't given much thought to boat travel before moving here, I'd also never really thought about wind turbines. Obviously I had seen them once I moved to Scoraig but hadn't realised the work involved to get them up and running or realised just how much they'd weigh!

Dragging the cable up the hill proved quite hard work.
and all the other parts weren't exactly easy
but we now have our own wind turbine
We took our boat across the loch to collect our new batteries for the 48 volt system and had the sheer joy of seeing dolphins jumping out the water and swimming alongside us.
