We spend just under 2 weeks at Ali Shornets (our new home) before heading back down to fetch another load. We're staying in the byre (adjoining the house) with the hope that renovation will prove easier if we're not living in it.The only piece of furniture I insisted bringing on the first run was our bed. So glad I did as the sleeping loft is not for me. We tried it the first night, I awoke to hearing a creature running about above Richs head. Also going up and down the ladder to go to the toilet proved painful and I've the type of bladder that if going to the toilet is a difficult operation it goes into overdrive. Getting the bed bits altogether at the same time though was proving difficult. Rich and Rob had managed to bring the bed over in the boat, the mattress took up most of the space and got a bit wet on one corner when a wave splashed over. After Rob had gone we decided to fetch the bed from the shed at the jetty. It had been left there until we felt we'd enough energy to attempt moving it. The base has a headboard and footboard so we carried these first. It was ok as long as you could keep stopping for rests every couple of minutes. Then we went back for the wooden slats and side pieces (bear in mind this is a 2 mile walk each time) We were then going to attempt to transport the mattress, which is very heavy, in the wheelbarrow. But then we met a very kind neighbour with a quad and trailer who brought it up for us. Very exciting! I can now sleep in my own bed. Just need the bolts to fasten it together. Where are the bolts? Frantically we look around and when we can't find them, hope they're in the car over the other side of the loch. They're not! Rich then remembers he left them on the table in Heanor. So it's the mattress on the floor then!.
The Byre
This is our first chance to properly explore the place. When we first viewed it last January we only spent a couple of hours here. The garden is a wonderful surprise, it's much bigger than we realised.I'm amazed by it all and can't quite believe we're here. The house needs alot of work, more than I'd admitted to myself when we first looked at it. It's going to be a long job and due to the logistics of getting stuff here and financial constraints it'll have to be slow and steady, I'm determined not to let it overwhelm us, I want us to enjoy it.
